Hot Air Ballooning is an exciting, uplifting and addictive activity
Unlike many aviation activities, ballooning is a very social activity, involving groups of people working together in small teams. Every balloon has a pilot and a crew chief. Even the smallest sports balloon is capable of flying 2 or 3 passengers as well as the pilot.
The team get the balloon prepared for flight and meet up with the balloon at the end of it’s flight to return it to base. Crewing for balloons is a sport in itself.
The net result is lot of fun, sensational experiences, and the chance to learn a professional skill.
Because balloons rely on stable air in which to fly safely, they mainly (in NSW & ACT) fly in the early morning to take advantage of the cool dense air that exists before the sun gets high in the sky. Solar heating of the ground generates thermals and gusty conditions so balloons do not generally fly in the middle of the day.
“One of the first things you learn about ballooning is when not to”. Liz Marrack, ballooning instructor.
